Online Bingo History

Ever wondered about the history of bingo games online, and how the game we all know and love went from being a fairground attraction to the thriving game it is today? There are many stories of how bingo games came to be, but one of the most likely stories has the origins of bingo set as far back as the year 1530 in Italy, where a popular lottery game that was played every Saturday began to attract a huge following.

By 1770 the lotto game had spread to France, where the game was adapted to include cards which had three rows across and nine columns down, with random bingo numbers marked on each card. The first column was marked with numbers from 1-10, the second from 11-20, and so on, with the final column marked from 81-90. Wooden chips numbered from 1-90 were then placed in a bag and randomly drawn, and as each number was called out, players would mark off their numbers on their cards, with the first player to mark off all their numbers being the winner.

The early bingo game spread through Europe like wildfire, and by the 1800’s it had sealed its reputation as one of the most popular games to play. Used as an education tool to teach children maths and problem solving, the game was just as much of a hit with adults as it was with younger players. Beans had replaced wooden chips, and the game was known as Beano right up until the mid 1900’s, when it was about to take another surprising turn. In 1970, a toy salesman called Edward Lowe happened to come across a Beano game on his travels in France. Watching the excitement of the crowd and seeing what a huge success it was with players of all ages, he took the idea back with him to New York where it would soon be the online bingo sensation it went on to become.

He created a unique version of the bingo set using dried beans; card and a rubber number stamp. Lowe then invited a few friends over to play the game. They were entranced, and at one stage the game got so exciting that one of the players accidently shouted ‘Bingo’ instead of ‘Beano’ when she had filled her card. Lowe knew he was onto something, and with the help of a Maths professor who came up with over 6000 number variations, he created the world’s first proper bingo game – which of course went on to become one of the most popular and famous games across the world. Bingo has come a long way since its humble beginnings, and for many years the game was limited to bingo halls, church fetes, fundraisers or bingo clubs. The launch of internet bingo took the game to new levels, offering one of the easiest and simplest ways for online bingo players to play the game from the comfort of their own homes.
